Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel

"Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you...no one."

Those were some of Rhode's last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.

It was the first time in 592 years I could take a breath. Lay in the sun. Taste.

Rhode sacrificed himself so I, Lenah Beaudonte, could be human again. So I could stop the blood lust.
I never expected to fall in love with someone else that wasn't Rhode.
But Justin was...daring. Exciting. More beautiful than I could dream.
I never expected to be sixteen again...then again, I never expected my past to come back and haunt me...

                                                                                -Chapters Canada

I really enjoyed this book. I have read my fair share of vampire books, but let me say that this one definitely stands out from all the rest.  Firstly, the young (well...) heroine actually chooses to be human, and therefore doesn't choose the guy. I think this concept is just revolutionary!  All joking aside, I think this was definitely a well needed change, and I have yet to read anything similar, where a vampire gets turned back into a human.

Having said that, I also want to give recognition for the plausibility of the plot. Everything seemed just a little bit more normal and relatable than in the typical vampire romance novel, which we have been seeing so much of as of late. I really enjoyed experiencing the new (to her) world that we happen to live in, and it really made me think of how far our society has come in a very short period of time. This was also gave way to some perfect little snippets of humour. The romance was actually a little bit of a downside for me, for the most part.  As much as I wanted to like, Justin, I wasn't really buying it. Which is suprising for me, because you can pretty much push any form of romance my way and I will devour it. In this case it just didn't seem sincere and believable.  It was like Justin just wasn't quite deep enough to embrace the maturity and situation in which Lenah found herself. I guess we will have to see in the follow-up how that develops.

This book was overall a good read, and I would recommend it not only for teens, but anyone who is looking for a vampire-switch-up of sorts.  You will not be disappointed.

Spoiler Alert: Don't read past this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

Right from the beginning, it is easy to see that this book is different from all of the other vampire ones out there.  Lenah Beaudonte (love the name) is an ancient vampire who is recieving the ultimate gift from her long-time soulmate: mortality.  And he is sacrificing himself to do it, a process that is hardly ever completed because it demands utter selflessness to be successful. So after hundreds of years of being a vampire, Lenah finally becomes human again, and is thrust into our world with only a few minutes guidance from her (mate?) and a few notes and gifts he leaves her.

Not long into her journey Lenah discovers Justin, who to me just seemed like glorified eye-candy. He was presented as immature right off the batt and was still dating a shallow bimbo. But he seems to fall for Lenah and embraces her past in its entirety. Trouble is always looming for Lenah, though, because her second vampire lover,Vicken, is going to realize what Rhode accomplished, and come to find what he believes is his: his Queen, Lenah.

Of course her old coven inevitably finds Lenah and takes her away. Which was pretty unexpected for me. I didn't expect for her to just hastily be ripped from the life she had built for herself at boarding school, and forced to do the ritual for Vicken.  (I was pretty confused about Vicken, whether I wanted to like him or not, and most of the time I felt myself pittying him.  Because the way that Lenah described him made him seem so noble, and like he really, truly loved her as well.  And of course he is going to come for you, he loves you and are connected by bond. Can you really blame him?)  I could have also done without Tony.  He didn't really come off as likeable, and I always feel uncomfortable whenever a pathetic stalkery dude falls for the girl that clearly only likes him as a friend. And this was one of those cases times about a thousand.

Despite a few minor setbacks, I really enjoyed this book, and think the sequel will be another hit. I recommend it to anyone who likes vampire fiction!

Sequel to come--Cheers & Enjoy♥

So I immediately wanted to buy this book when I saw it, just because of the gorgeous, artistic cover.  Unfortunately the cover can sometimes be the deciding factor for me when I choose a book to read.  And this one had all the right things going for it.  Loved the colour.  Loved the picture.  Loved the font and placement of everything!  Gorgy-gorge-gorge.

Another reason why I wanted to read it was because, let's be honest, we all know what we were thinking: Hilary Duff wrote a book?  I had to see if it was good.  And it was.  I actually love the concept, and am really looking forward to the sequel.  Probably the only bad thing I would have to say about it was that the words just seemed too big on the pages.  It went by too fast.  I guess this probably is a good idea if you are thinking of the target audience: teens.  But for me it kind of just cheapened it.  Made it too fluffy or something I can't quite put into words.

So the book is targeted to teens, but I feel that it does appeal to an older audience too.  I absolutely loved the concept (so much that I had to mention it twice-tehe), and I think it was interesting to see that someone like Hilary Duff, that I think a lot of us assume doesn't do any deep thinking, can come up with some pretty novel ideas.  I think she seriously has a future here.  The romance aspect was infectious, and kept me wanting more, and still now I'm craving Sage!  The sci-fi aspect was also perfection in my opinion, and I found it was really different from a lot of the books I've been reading lately that seem too obvious.  The synopsis didn't give away too much, and throughout the book there weren't those kinds of clues that are so obvious to the reader, but not to the character.  You know what I'm talking about!  Overall really good read.  I'll take Hilary the writer over Hilary the too-sugary actress any day!

Spoiler Alert: Don't read past this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

So let me just say that I have always loved the concept of Reincarnation.  I have yet to really read a book that has done it really well though.  I read one about a year ago, that I was anticipating for so long, and I was so disappointed.  That's why I'm glad that this book did not give away the concept right off the bat.  I always hate it when a book is too predictable.

Clea is the main character, and when we are introduced to her, her father has been missing for about a year.  Very sad, I know.  I think that Hilary conveyed this emotion beautifully, and I really felt it with Clea.  Of course there was a guy who is clearly in love with Clea, Ben, but I loved that they didn't end up together in the end.  (Knock on wood for the sequel).  It kept me guessing because the true love interest, Sage, wasn't introduced in person until much later on in the book.  I just really cannot say enough how perfect that aspect was.  I don't know if this was the desired effect, but I loved the way everything transpired.  And at the end, I nearly screamed with Clea as she very nearly broke when Sage revealed that he was going to kill himself.  The emotion evoked was so strong, and I love when I can really get into the book with the character.

Having said all these wonderful things, I didn't really enjoy the character of Rayna.  She just wasn't really developed enough for me.  Like we had the description of her in the beginning, but I think that over the course of the whole book I must have pictured her as four different people.  And she never seemed to act like she was previously described.  I actually found her annoying...  But I guess nothing can be perfect!

Until the next installment--Cheers & Enjoy♥

My Strange Addiction...

The Library ☺

Yes I am here again, broadcasting Live from the Ottawa Public Library.  Which probably is bothering some people since I seem to be stuck with the computer that has a keyboard from the 17th century.
Click-Clickity-CLack.

I did have good reason for coming here, though, as I have yet to pick a topic for my audio-visual presentation for my Gaelic Language and Culture class.  So I thought I would mosy on over and check out some books.  Well I found lots on Scottish Highland Clans and their tartans, and also a whole slew of books that are apparently going to help me "build my own family tree".  And by that they mean discover the existing one, not giving mating tips so I can procreate.  Although how fun would that be to read?!
Anywho, I've been wanting to do this for a while, and hopefully these books will help me get started, as I really have no idea how to go about it.  If anyone else has any input, do not hesitate to share!

So anywho, now my backpack weighs about as much as a pregnant elephant...  (I am going to have so much fun toting that on the bus; hopefully it's not too crowded.)

So the Oscars were last night, and I loved them immensely.  James Franco and Anne Hathaway were pretty hilarious, and I loved all the funny extras that were incorporated in between the boring speeches made by people I don't know (unless you are famous, of course).  I especially loved the intro, with all of the Inception references, well all the movie references, really.  Also loved that they put the movies to song about mid-way through, trying to prove that this year was one for musicals.  "Don't You Own a Shirt" was simply titillating :)   I was surprised that Inception actually won so many awards, because let's be honest, it's not very often that the Academy showcases movies that I don't have to TRY to like.
P.S.  James Franco's grandma was adorable!
P.P.S.  Gwyneth Paltrow was horrendous.

I'd also like to mention that Scarlett Johansson's dress was so gorgeous that it actually made me change my opinion on her as a person.  I am shallow; bite me.

Before I forget, I just want to get off my chest how crazy I am going not knowing casting choices for various upcoming movies stemming from some of my fav books.  Like seriously, they just keep jerking me around and I cannot stand it!  One day this guy is cast, the next another guy, neither of them being the one that it should be...  I will not rest until the desicions are made, and also will not let you rest either!  Just thought I'd let you know ☺

Keep Reading--Cheers & Enjoy♥

The Secret Life of Prince Charming by Deb Caletti

Quinn is surrounded by women with broken hearts. Between her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother, Quinn hears nothing but cautionary tales. Then she gets dumped and starts to wonder if there really are no good men. It doesn't help when Quinn discovers that her selfish, womanizing father has stolen more from the women in his life than their hearts.

Quinn joins forces with the stepsisters she's never met and sets out to right her father's wrongs. Somewhere along the way, she ends up mending her own heart as well.

                                                                              -Fantastic Fiction

I loved this book.  I must admit that it started out pretty slow, but it was so worth its weight in knowledge and wisdom.  I have only ever read one Deb Caletti book, and I admit that it doesn't really stick out in my mind, that is to say it was neither extremely dynamic nor incredibly dull.  I now know why all of her books remain on my book list!  I think it is perfect for all ages, and I have already recommended it to my Maj (which I don't do often, because I know she doesn't read as much as I would like her to, and if she does not like the first page of a book, she will not read it).  I really hope that she chooses to read this one.
So what gives it a 4½ rating, when I already mentioned that it commenced rather sleepily?  I'm not really sure if it's just one of those books that specifically spoke to me, or what, but I found it so emotionally enriching, and just completely relevant to my life right now, and really just spoke to me.  I understand that this is not the most helpful way to explain, but I cannot really put into words how much this book spoke to me, and seemed like the most accurate portrayal of love and family, and everything really.  I recommend it to every woman, though I think that if you are too young, you may not truly understand the messages, and need to read it a second time after you have lived a little more.  It just seems like one of those messages that your mom tells you, "you don't understand now, but you will later" that seemed to frustrate the heck out of me while growing up, but I totally just get now.

This was a very teen romance-ish book, but also dealt with various family dynamics, and every generation was involved, which is why I cannot stress enough that every woman, young or old, should read this book.  The portrait of love is just amazing, and something I think everyone should know and hear at least once.

Spoiler Alert: Don't read after this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

So as aforementioned, the book did start out pretty slowly.  We are introduced to Quinn, the main protagonist and her family.  Her mother, aunt, and grandmother, all single, and weary of men altogether.  Quinn has a younger sister, and of course a father, but her parents are divorced.  She also has a boyfriend, but we can tell right off the bat Quinn is definitely wanting more from that relationship.

So Quinn's father definitely contributes to pretty much all the plot lines going on in the book.  He is selfish, a womanizer, and is pretty much horrible to his children, but not in a physical way.  Just constantly cutting them down very subtly, just enough for Quinn to want more and more from him, which just made me hate him even more.  So basically Quinn is at her father's one day (who is quasi-famous for being in a band, but always lies to make himself look better), and after he tells her that he doesn't think he is going to pay for her to go to college (even though he is filthy rich), Quinn is in his living room and notices all the little nick-nacks that her father has always had, are in fact not his, like he has been boasting whenever he has company over.  They actually all belong to his ex-girlfriends and wives, that he has treated in the same way he treats his daughters (like trash, but just not enough for them to really realize how horrible he is).

So Quinn decides to contact her half-sister Frances Lee, whom she has only met once, and go on a "karmic road trip" to return all of these posessions that their father has stolen from the various women in his life.  I thought this was epic, because we got to see all of these women, along with the three daughters that this man neglects, and what this man did to them.  It was truly eye-opening, and I loved it.  Of course, along the way, Quinn meets Jake, a guy who looks like trouble and seems to fit her mother's criteria for the "wrong guy" to a tee.  Of course they fall in love, predictably, but in such a wholesome and true way, that it makes me smile when I think about it.

Of course the girl's journey has some bumps along the way, but in the end, they become closer than ever, and realize truly how horrible their father is, especially Quinn who is just constantly vying for his affection and love, despite that he is just too selfish to give it.

What I found truly remarkable about the book were the passages from each woman in the book, explaining love, what it means to them, and how they came to the realization, and grew to be the remarkable women that they are.  At first, the passages were a tad confusing, because they jump back and forth between all women (which there are lots), and I wasn't completely sure of who was who at first.  But then I realized that it didn't really matter; the messages were the important things to know.  Whether that woman was talking about Quinn's father or not, or abusive guys, or nice guys that weren't right for them, I think that it truly conveyed messages to all women about love, and what it means to share that with the right someone, and respect yourself.

I really cannot convey into words how amazing this book was, and the amazing writing of Deb Caletti.  She is obviously amazing, and I cannot wait to read more of her stuff!

En Route... (Greyhound I ♥ You)

Awesome!

The only word to explain how my day has turned out. So it was looking not so great at first, woke up and there was a snowstorm in progress (they seem to be emerging at the most inopportune times lately, don't they?) I always dread travelling, as it is pretty much always at least 10 hours that have been hastily stolen from my life. Today, however, I made it from London to Toronto in what I feel can only be record time, less than two hours!, allowing me to catch the bus headed to Ottawa about two hours before I had expected. Which let me tell you is just peachy for me.. I would have been completely fine with these results!

Then I see the navy-blue perfection-confection of a Greyhound bus rolling in, and I am ecstatic!

          Wifi!           Plug-ins!           Extra leg-room!
                    (it boasts on the side)

It is love at first sight. Of all the times I have made the treacherously time-consuming journey home and back, I have only been chanceuse enough like twice to ride in one of the brand new buses-and one of those times my plug was not functioning, rendering the wifi quite useless, as my computer battery quite simply sucks.

Did I mention that it has leather seats?  LOVE♥

So the weather has also turned out beautifully, and is as clear as hand sanitizer! (not really sure if this simile works).

So now I am free to blog, blog, blog!  So stay tuned for more Book reviews, as I bump along Southern Ontario!

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

Nine of us came here.  We look like you.  We talk like you.  We live among you.  But we are not you.  We can do things you dream of doing.  We have powers you dream of having.  We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen.  We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books-but we are real.

Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them.  But they found us and started hunting us first.  Now all of us are running.  Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in.  We have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.

They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They Killed them all.

I am Number Four.  I am Next.                                                 -Chapters Canada

This book was pretty amazing.  I did see it a lot before I decided to read it, the movie tie-in version that is (which I loathe for any book!), as I passed by chapters, and a little bit on the Internet.  There were some factors that made me want to read it, though, as with any book.

First of all, I realized that it is a movie as well.  Both I had been aware of, but hadn't really put together that they were one and the same until about two weeks before the movie release.  I instantly knew I had to read it, because of course any book-to-movie fandango needs to be book then movie, in that order, and that order only.  Also, the fact that Alex Pettyfer plays the lead in the movie was pretty persuasive, as I can see that he is gonna be like THE hit new face around Hollywood for at least the next little while (you really do not even want me to elaborate on my prediction).  Thirdly, the author(s), whom are cleverly anonymiscized by the pseudonym Pittacus Lore, is made up in part by James Frey.  This intrigues me immensely, as I have of course read A Million Little Pieces (and only part of My Friend Leonard, probably the only book EVER that I have not finished) and am terribly familiar with the Oprah controversy that surrounds Frey.  I also have a certain fondness for Diana Agron (she plays the love interest in the movie) due to her being one of the stars of Glee.. and come one, I would die for Glee..

Anyway, so now you know some of the background.
Having said that, this book was marvelous, had me hooked from the beginning.  It is sci-fi, but in a very humanistic and subtle way, I found.  Kinda of dystopian as well, which made me reminiscent of The Uglies trilogy/saga by Scott Westerfeld, in the way that they mention Earth in a very allegorical way, that serves to warn us ready, subtly, of the harm we cause our planet every day, and the possible consequences.  Love that.

I also want to mention, before I get into detail, that the romantic aspect was delicious, and I hope to see it carried through the series :)

Spoiler Alert: Don't read after this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

The book starts out very intriguingly, introducing us into the novel ideas that surround John and Henri, and their planet, Lorien.  We learn quite fast that they are in danger.  John especially, since he is Number Four in line, the first three already killed.  When John gets the third tattoo on his leg, he knows that Number Three is dead.  This means that they need move again, which is all that they really know since arriving on Earth, when their planet and race were absolutely obliterated by Mogadorians.  There are many other important details that I'm not going to get into now, but I find them all interesting and new, and that is pretty important to me, as, since I've read so many books, I rarely run into book concepts that don't remind me of another book and are completely unique in themselves.

After moving to Paradise, Ohio, it doesn't take John long to fall for fair Sarah Hart.  This is really quite obvious, but still in a very obvious way.  So John is continually told by Henri (his guardian from Lorien) to keep a low profile, so that they won't be tracked by the Mogadorians, but John's Legacies (powers) are just now emerging, and he of course cannot help but to use them at various times to save Sarah.

Of course this leads to the Mogadorians arriving, right after John is forced to tell Sarah the truth about himself.  The books ends shortly after this, after an almost too good to be true fight (almost was too easy, but I guess I can let it go, just this once).  Number Six shows up, and Henri dies, which I still don't quite want to believe is the truth :(  .  The book is a series, and now I guess that John and Six are gonna meet up with the remaining four numbers, to battle it out with the Mogadorians, so they can save the Earth and return to their planet.

I just hope John comes back for Sarah.
And does not fall for Six, which was subtly foreshadowed in the novel.
Although, I may have to come back and remind myself of what I am thinking now, because we all know how easily swayed I am by a little romance :D

AHHHHHHHHHHH!

March 8, 2011.

post scriptum: BOOO Gwyneth Paltrow for being included!

Weekend Hiatus & Other Random-nosity

So I've been pretty busy the last few days and haven't been able to really compile all of my adventures, but I am free now (kind of, I am semi-listening to my chatty sis-tehe), so I will fill you all in.

My weekend was pretty awesome.  I started prepping for my amazing weekend with the fam on Thursday after work.  Cait and I pretty much cleaned like freaks to get our apartment spic 'n' span, and ready for the fam-jam.  Of course I had trouble sleeping that night (they were arriving Friday morning).  It was like that "too excited to sleep" feeling that I usually only get before Christmas.  So Friday I unfortunately still had one class, which lasted all of like 20 minutes, and then my weekend really began!  (BTW: it was like spring in Ottawa on Friday; I went to class in my sweater!)

The weekend was overall pretty awesome, although a tad bit cold (though not colder than it has been in the past few weeks, which I continually reminded my family!)  Went for a movie, checked out some Winterlude activities, went to Cora's for breakie (a must!), ordered some pizza and Chinese, and of course did some shopping.  The canal finally opened up for a few kilometers on Sunday, so we were able to walk along that for a bit.  Then we flew back home, into a bona fide snow-storm from Toronto to home.  Seriously!  Thank Goddess my sister's boyfriend's sister (say that 3 times fast!) and her husband live in Cambridge, and they were able to come pick us up and let us stay the night! We really cannot thank them enough☺

Anywhoooosle... Here I am now, back in the Fo/Wyoming (no, not in the US), where my family gets to share me whilst I am home :)
Today is my sister Heather's turn with me, and let me say she has utilized her time well.  We rearranged her entire living room (like 3 times)!  But I loved every minute of it♥

Unfortunately I missed Glee last night, but I cannot be without it for long (it's already starting to affect my day-to-day tasks, I swear), so more on that later.

Other Random things that have happened since my last blog post, and the overall state of things:
-I am in the process of transcribing/amalgamating the 5 versions of Chapter One of The Mortal Instruments: City of Fallen Angels.  Has anyone else finished theirs, and if so, what do you think?

-So I pretty much continually Google News (like more than once a day) the Hunger Games movie in order to see if they have done the casting yet.  Apparently I have been slacking in that department because it seems as though they have already cast someone for Peeta Mellark, and are thinking of casting some wannabe star for the stat, Katniss Everdeen.  If this happens, so help me, I will kill someone.  Like seriously, I don't care how much Alyson Stoner wants it, she is not the right choice.  I mean, come on, she was on Camp Rock.  You cannot do Disney and do deep (unless you are Zac Efron...i love you), and certainly not try it out on something like The Hunger Games, that has such a strong following.  I am seriously considering boycotting if this stupid brat gets her way, and the idea comes to fruition.  How desperate is she?  She just happened to post Twitter pictures of her climbing rocks and a tree, and is pretty much launching a campaign to be cast.  Let me let you in on a little secret honey, that only works if you are Betty White!
I need to stop now, before I damage my computer.....
But not before mentioning who IMDB lists as allegedly being cast as Peeta.  Gabriel Liotta.  Who? Don't get me wrong, casting a no one is sometimes a good idea, but he looks like a total weirdo!  And he looks nothing like Peeta.  I'm just pissed at the whole situation.  Especially when they also mention Chloe Moretz being a contender as well.  She is way too young, (she could maybe pull off Prim) need I say more?
P.S. Liam Hemsworth told the press that he wanted the role of Peeta, and I'm like, HELLO?... umm, yes PLEASE!

-I recently watched the movie Just Go With It and it was pretty good, and especially funny.  I love Jennifer Aniston in anything, and I like about 80% of Adam Sandler's movies, this being one of them.  I loved the subtle incorporation of the usual Sandler characters, and the chemistry between the main characters was electric.  The supporting characters were also awesome, and I loved how they weren't shown in the previews, so it was like a delectable little surprise when we saw them introduced on screen.  Every single character was crucial to the overall effect of the movie, and I really cannot stress it enough: this movie is light and pleasurable, and is the perfect choice if you are looking for a good romantic comedy.

-Justin Bieber.                        Cut.  His.  Hair.                             Woah is me, I'm so Woah.
Apparently the Biebs gave a box of it to his long-time friend Ellen DeGeneres so she can auction it off for charity.  I cannot decide if this is smart/cute or creepy/sad...  But exciting nonetheless.  Personally I thought he would milk the hair-trend train a liiiiiittle bit longer... so it was quite a surprise to me.

So this is all I can think of right now so...

More to come--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Strangest Day Ever...

So today's blog is once again brought to you by the Ottawa Public Library... :)

Today is by far the strangest day I have had in a long time.. Just random things happening that are not related, but stuff you don't see every day...

1) On my way to class there was a TV interview going on in Tabaret Hall (that I may very well be in the background of, tune in to Rogers TV to find out!).  So I guess this is kinda common in Ottawa, but still it just seems weird that it happened in conjunction junction with other random things...

2) I am pretty sure that I almost got scammed/conned/pick-pocketed (seriously, I had to check my pockets after!) in Sears.  So here I am, just heading to my local Sephora branch to innocently visit the new OPI by Sephora Glee collection nailpolish shades (I really just had to see them in person, even though I have no money to purchase them. PS they are Like Totes Fabu!), when I get accosted by some rando guy who claimed to be shooting a movie.  I know, creepy right?  Well, unfortunately, I did not have a chance to really even speak before he was trying to usher me onwards, through Sears, with the promise of free movie passes if I helped him with something.  He said that someone had asthma and they needed help, and he needed someone who spoke French.  Meanwhile, I'm still pretty stunned (also wondering if my French is even competent enough to help in a life or death situation!), as he is trying to tell me his name (I don't even remember, despite him having said it like a bajillion times-Peter something.. maybe?), the movies that he's worked on (Aviator, The Whole Nine Yards.. in Montreal apparently) OH, and that he is a stunt coordinator, pretty adamant about it, actually.. Anywho, it was all very strange, and he was telling me to hurry up, even though I was really sketched out and trying to process all the info he was ramming down my throat, so I'm not really sure of the timeline because it was all soooo weird and happened so fast: one minute he was saying something about asthma, then telling me I was really pretty, which is also really creeper-esque, also mentioning something about him leaving his laptop with me, and something about keys, and Chapters...? and also pointing to the makeup counter at Sears.. I know, like I said, straaaaange doesn't even begin to cover it.  So then he mentioned something about money and needing money for a cab, I can only assume to get to the person with asthma.. Fortunately, by this time, I had gotten my thoughts in order, and told him in fact that I didn't have any money on my person (which is totally true, I almost never have cash, and don't even have $2 on my debit card), which is when he proceeded to push me away and call me fat and stupid.  All of this in a matter of probably like 30 seconds, a minute tops.  I mean, WOAH is me.... I'm so woah..

So then I pretty much ran as fast as one can while wearing a sweater, a coat, heavy winter boots and backpack full of 4 classes worth of books.  Also while checking my pockets to see that my phone, iPod, and UPass were still there.  They were.  I am still not convinced that he didn't sneak a bomb into my backpack or something...

3) Still in the mall, and still pretty shaken up about being accosted, I run into a friend, Matt (who coincidentally happened to be on the phone with Cait-coolio).  Luckily for him, I noticed that it was him in time, because seriously, I saw another person that gesturing as if stop me, and I had already been through enough in Sears!  Also, when I got outside someone stopped me to ask for the time.  I mean do I just look approachable today or something.. or like a target... ?

4) So then, I am walking through the park, on my way here, and see that part of the park (which is currently inhabited with various Winterlude activities) is cordonned off, which at first I thought was just because the ice sculptures were there, and they were somehow not safe to be around due to the strange weather we've been having lately.  And then I see camera crew number 2.  So I'm like what the heck is going on in Ottawa today..  And then as I leave the park, now at the Elgin/Laurier intersection downtown, I see camera crew number 3, in addition to a police barricade.. and then I start to get really suspiscous, but pretty much just carry on my merry way to the library, which was pretty eerie, seeing how I was like the only person on what is usually a very busy block.  Then there was more police tape, that I observed to look very legit and serious, and more policemen, all surrounding a dump-truck.. Pretty anticlimactic, right?  Wrong.  So I decided to Google-it-out when I got here, and discovered that some poor soul (a 64-year old man, to be exact) was struck and killed by the dumptruck at lunch-time  :(   If you would like to read the article, you can find it here.

Very sad conclusion to my strange story, I must admit...

Anywho (she writes melancholically), hope you enjoy my strange and eerie day so far...
Hopefully there won't be any other weird shananigans to report after I return home..
I shall now find a warm, safe place to curl up with a book, hopefully soothing myself....

Later--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright

The body of a young girl is discovered in a field of wheat. Her flesh mutilated by telltale claw marks. The Wolf has broken the peace. When Valerie learns that her sister has been killed by the legendary creature, she finds herself at the center of a dark mystery, one that has plagued her village for generations. It is revealed that the werewolf lives among them, and everyone in the village immediately becomes a suspect. Could her secret love Peter be behind the attacks on her town? Is it her betrothed, Henry? Or someone even closer to her? As the men in the village hunt for the beast, Valerie turns to her grandmother for help. She gives Valerie a handmade red riding cloak, and guides her through the web of lies and deception that has held her town together for so long. Will Valerie discover the werewolf's identity before the town is ripped apart? This is a dangerous new vision of a classic fairy tale, the happy ending could be hard to find.
                                                                               -Fantastic Fiction

So I read this book a few weeks ago after seeing it in Chapters and realizing that it was tied in with the upcoming movie.  What I didn't know was that the book is actually based on the movie, not the other way around, which is usually the case.  Although this presented both pros and cons, overall, I think it was a pretty good book.
Fun Fact: the movie, therefore the book, stemmed from Leonardo DiCaprio's idea.  Yummm..

So since it happened to be based on the movie, I felt that it wasn't that rich in detail.. or something that I just can't quite pinpoint.  It's kind of the opposite of when a book gets turned into a movie, and you have to leave stuff out because there is no way that so much content can fit into 2 measly hours.  In this case, about 2 hours did not make for very thick (the only word I can come up with to describe this sentiment I cannot explain) reading.  It seemed to just fly by, and obviously, when I go to watch the movie, there will be nothing coming as a surprise.  This can be construed as either good or bad.

Having said that, a very good idea was leaving out the last chapter, which I am assuming will be released at the same time as the movie, as to not completely spoil the movie for people that have read the book.  I think this is genius, and cannot wait to find out how this romantic yet creepy histoire concludes.

Spoiler Alert: Don't read past this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

So the book starts out with an introduction to the main character, Valerie, and her family.  We also get a little insight into the crazy lifestyle of the village where she lives. (I always love a little dystopian creepiness).  Basically, there is a wolf living somewhere, that only agrees not to slay the townspeople if they offer him sacrifices every once in a while.  At a very young age, Valerie has a close encounter with the Wolf, thus already flagging her as weird.  I thought that it would turn out that the Wolf was really just misunderstood and he was actually gentle and loving (too many werewolf books for me I guess!)

This is sooooo not the case.

Basically the wolf kills Valerie's sister pretty early on, during the Blood Moon, which apparently is not all that common in the little village.  So they bring in some recruits.  The creepy renound Father Soloman is brought in to slay the wolf, and basically, after the Wolf kills a whole bunch more people, tells the people that the Wolf is stronger than he has ever seen.  Oh and also that it is one of the towns-people.

So things take a turn for the scandalous when the Wolf takes a liking to Valerie, we never really do find out why-perhaps in the movie?-and wants her to leave the village with him, saying he will spare the rest of the inhabitants.  At the same time though, Valerie is struggling with trying to figure out whose eyes the Wolf's eyes remind her of.  Is it Henry, her basically arranged marriage; Peter, her unrequited lover; or her Grandmother, who has always been a little off.

Of course, Father Soloman finds out that Valerie has been communicating-sort of-with the Wolf, and predictably decides to use her as a sacrifice for the village, deciding that this is the only option, because the Wolf is too strong.  She escapes.

This is pretty much where the book ends, and I am super pumped to find out who she chooses to stay with, whether they are the wolf or not.

Follow-up to come--Cheers & Enjoy♥

A little Puzzle Piece of Heaven♥

So I stumbled upon a little piece of heaven, albeit in puzzle form, today.  Well it was actually emailed to me: Yay for book-related emails!

So The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare is one of my favourites, I just read it this past summer (and yay it is gonna be in movie form soon).  The first 3 books in the series were amazingly written, and pulled off the perfect amount of action, sci-fi, and love.  Unfortunately the next book, City of Fallen Angels, doesn't come out until April 5th of this year.

In order to appease my longing, though, some genius decided (yes I like to think just for my benefit) that they would put together a little game that goes like this:

Every day of this week (Feb 14-18), the same chapter from the upcoming book, City of Fallen Angels, will be released on a different book-blog each week, but some of each will be blocked out, so at the end of the week you can put the whole chapter together and read it in its entirety.

This is so exciting, and if you would like to participate, click here.

Happy amalgamating, fellow book lovers!

More to come--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Hell Week, Here I Come!

It is Monday.  And so it begins.... Hell Week.

So, it's not really that bad I guess.  But next week is reading week, and I just want this one to be over so I can go home and relax!  Also, this weekend, my fam jam is coming up here for a visit and to attend Winterlude, and I am super excited :)

So my weekend has been pretty uneventful, other than last night's marathon Grammy's blog (which I highly recommend you check out).  I worked all weekend.  Woooooo.... NAT!  Except that at least now I will have money for food lol.  So I also haven't been reading all that much either, I have been way too tired, and I think that in the last 4 days I have read a disgraceful 50 pages of a book I started.  And I was on such a good streak too. (Before that I think I read about 6 or 7 books in a week).  Perhaps I will have more time during reading week, so check back for more reviews :)

I really am too melancholy to post anymore... I hope everyone's week is not as hellish as mine.

Oooh I just remembered that it's Monday and that means awesome TV night! YAY, and Glee tomorrow.  Double YAY with sprinkles :)

More to come--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Live from the Grammy's...

AKA- The Grammy's are happening live right now, and I am blogging as I see them, ergo: Live :)

So I only caught like 10 minutes of the pre-Grammy red carpet show, but I did see enough to notice Rihanna, and now cannot not decide whether I absolutely hate or kinda like her dress choice.  I will say that the combination of red hair (that I feel like is loooong overdue for a change) and tinsel hoola-hoops kinda make her look like she is the mayor of Whoville... interesting.. better put me down for hating it then lol.
So one of the only other people on the red carpet that I managed to catch was Lea Michele.  She looked amazing, as per usual, but I have noticed lately that she is always showing a tremendous amount of cleave.. es-trange....

So the show opened up with a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who actually couldn't attend the awards this year because she is recovering from a hospitalization.. Don't quote me on this, but I think I read somewhere that she has cancer, so Get Well Aretha!  The tribute was executed quite dramatically, I must add, by probably the most diverse musical combination ever: Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, and Yolanda Adams (whom I have never actually heard of).  I thought it was perfectly executed and was a very heartfelt showcase of all that talent.

Best Pop Duo or Group- Hey, Soul Sister (live) by Train
Bahahaha, "Thanks Justin Bieber, for not being a duo or a group!"-Patrick Monahan of Train
So although I obviously would have rather seen Glee win for Don't Stop Believin' (Regionals version)-btw I like their first version of Don't Stop Believin' waaaaay better-I guess I am glad and kind of expected this song to win since it was pretty much like the most popular song this year, I mean geez... it was everywhere!  Good thing it was good enough to withstand this in my books and didn't suffer from over-played-itis :)

Ok so the Lady Gaga performance is happening now, which kind of surprises me because I figured they would leave this until near the end, although, considering she showed up (kind of?) on the red carpet in the form of an egg/womb (yes you heard that right), they clearly needed to afford her some face-time... So obvy she was not available for interviews, but apparently this was really her in the egg, and not a stand-in... this is a very creepy creative way of making your entrance, I guess...
So I do quite like this new song, and it seems almost not that creepy, perhaps this is an indication of the style of her upcoming album. One can only hope.
P.s. Her creepy shoulder-bone-skin pads are verrr verr strange... innovative?

Very cute that Blake Shelton introduced Miranda Lambert's performance.. and although I may have heard her song "The House that Built Me" a couple times before, I'm not that familiar with it... I do really like it though :)

Oooooh power-trio... sounds important, Ryan-do go on....
Yay, Bruno Mars :)   He is like fabu, even though he is way too kinda feminine.
B.o.B., one word: MAGIC♥
I love that they have catered exactly to my wants and needs, how considerate of the Grammy (committee? academy?)
Oh-em-gee, I love that it gets all retro... and YAY, that it is Grenade with a twist.
(side note, is it just me or are there only two... Bruno, yes, and Bob, yes.... so... two?)
Ok so now I see the third part of the trio... Janelle Monae... whom I don't think I am familiar with.. She is slightly familiar though (I mean that's not the most common hairstyle).

As interesting and talented as Miss Monae is, am I the only one that's noticed that there has only been one award so far... It's been an hour already!  Oooh, hold on....

Yummm... Dierks Bently♥♥

Best Female Country Vocal- The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert
I really do love Miranda Lambert, but I kinda liked all of the songs equally.  Having said that, I would have liked to see Carrie Underwood win, because I like Temporary Home like, a sliiiiiiver, more than the others, and also because I want to see what she is wearing (does that make me a horrible person?-tehe).

Is it just me, or is Eva Longoria appearing everywhere lately? Like what in the world does she have to do with the Grammy's...

Oooooh, Here we go, Justin Bieber... So let it just be stated that I am Switzerland when it comes to the Biebs...

Loved the cute Usher segue into the performance.  Hmmmm... do I like Baby à la regular or acoustic better.. I must ponder this further, later... Umm.. drums? Justin do you have African heiritage that you are keeping from us?  I luuuuuurve Never Say Never..
Whilst I watch the Biebs break it down à la Usher, I can't help but contemplate what would have happened if, let's say, Lady Gaga, discovered Justin... would he be wearing a really weird costume right now and rocking some poker-face hand action?.. just something to think about..

Ok so even though I hate that the Will and Jada Pinkett Smith seedlings seem to be taking over (cough-NEPOTISM), Jaden Smith is super cute in this song, and cutting to the camera view of the proud parents was super a-dor-able.

Um hold up, is Usher wearing a bright blue straight-jacket-space-suit hybrid?? weird......
Yumm, hello John Mayer... I see you there :)

Best Rock Album- The Resistance by Muse
I really do not have a single thing to say about this win, or any of the nominees really, as I don't think I am quite qualified in judging, seeing as I don't know anything about them lol.. I will mention that they are the second artist to win after performing.. I wonder if this will be a trend...

Selena Gomez is super gorgeous.. Love her dress!

Best Pop Vocal Album- The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga
This is what I love: the suspense, I mean if you ask me, it could have gone to anyone, but I am quite glad that I get to see Lady Gaga's Batman suit up close.  Woah... it is quite short, but don't worry, the crazy dominatrix boots cover up most of her legs!

David Letterman- Grammy Top 10 List, soooo funny.
#1-Justin Bieber? Hairpiece.-Cut to Justin looking either surprised or not understanding.

I LOVE this song! The Cave - Mumford & Sons.. And yes Cait, you do know it, even though you'll think you don't!  Wow, Bob Dylan is old... But he still knows how to rock out! (Even though it sounds like there rocks coating his throat).

Ughhhhhh, so they keep saying more to come, blah blah.. Let me just sat that I am NOT looking forward to the Gweneth Paltrow-Cee Lo Green duet.  I love F*** You by Cee Lo, but I didn't like the Holly Holliday verson on Glee, and I will not like this one, I can assure you!  I also can't believe that Lady Antebellum is still performing Need You Now.. it feels like it should have been on last year's Grammy's.. maybe because it was waaaaay too overplayed last year..  I still love it though, and the rejuvenated Puck-Rachel verson on Glee♥.

Lifetime Achievement Awards- Julie Andrews, Roy Haynes, Juilliard String Quartet, the Kingston Trio, Dolly Parton, The Ramones, George Beverly Shea.

Dear Lea Michele,
                 I ♥ You...

Ok so Lady Antebellum is performing a different song, and it is amazing :)  I Love American Honey.
I take it back, they have just segued into Need You Now.. But I guess it is okay, as it kinda fits beautifully into their performance.. :)  I have to say I am really looking forward to following this promising group from here on out, they are soooo delicious.

Miley Cyrus and the Kings of Leon? Really?  I dunno, maybe her sex is on fire.....?

Best Country Album- Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
Ok so it is really unfair to make me choose between all of the great nominees, but I must admit that Lady Antebellum definitely deserve the win. Need You Now is amazing!, and I promise I won't mention it again-tehe.

Holy Christmas, what the fruck is Cee Lo wearing??  You certainly are not an XBOX in THAT!. So I think I am now just realizing how weird Cee Lo Green is.. interesting. Um are those muppets?.. the plot thickens...

BOOOOO! Gweneth Paltrow Sucks!!  Just because you are married to someone who can sing, does not mean that you can!  That is so not how it works sweetheart..

*I really cannot convey with words exactly how ridickliss Cee Lo looks at this exact moment.... like WOW.

Neil Patrick Harris, I also Love You, and you are hilarious :)  Please be my boyfriend brother.  I also can't wait to see you in Beastly, I have only been waiting for, what, like, ever?

"This past Monday I had the pleasure of having sex with her, on TV no less.  It left me exhausted, aroused and more than a little confused."-Neil Patrick Harris introducing Katy Perry

Katy Perry is amazing, and I love how, even though she has so many awesome and amazingly popular singles from her current album, she chose to perform a song that is not as well known, but still just as emotional and moving, and will definitely become just as popular :)
She is just so dang cute.. p.s. Her and Russell Brand are super perfect together, and I hope they last forever and ever and ever.

Bahaha Nicole Kidman singing along to Teenage Dream may just be the funniest thing of the whole show... wait what is she even doing there... oh right.. Keith Urban.. Mmmmmm, KEITH URBAN.

Ok so this is perfect, not only because I was just thinking about Keith Urban.  Not even because I also want John Mayer in my bed.  Not even because I sometimes spontaneously belt out this song (Jolene) while amongst unsuspecting friends, family members, or strangers.  This is perfect because the trio is so dang perfect together, and make it sound amazing.

Bahaha x2.. yes you stick to the script John Mayer, because you probably definitely have, like, way more daughters that you don't know about! You man slut, you.

Song of the Year- Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
Awwww, them accepting was soooo cute, and they definitely deserve this!  So I said that I wouldn't mention it again, but clearly it was meant to be!

Seth Rogen = 1 part adorable + 2 parts hilarious!
"This is my first time at the Grammy's.  I'm having a spectacular time so far.  I've seen things I've never seen before, and heard things I never heard before, and that wasn't even watching the show, that was backstage getting high with Miley Cyrus"     -Seth Rogen

So I am really glad that Rihanna changed (although this dress is pretty awful as well), I would hate to see what the spotlights would do to her see-through gown.  Let the record show that I am so glad that Eminem no longer has bleach-blond hair.  I'm not sure who the white girl singing was (Skylar Grey maybe?), but I quite liked it.
Cue Eminem ruining it lol.
Dr. Dre = meh...

Best New Artist- Esperanza Spalding
     Who now, what now?
I can't believe this person I have never heard of beat out Drake, Florence & the Machine, Mumford & Sons, and the BIEBS? Like huh....?

Matthew Morrison is coming out with an album... wonder how that'll turn out...
Care not about Grammy camp.................

Mick Jagger = awesome.  'Nuff said.

MusiCares Person of the Year- Barbara Streisand
I didn't realize how big she was in the music world until recently, because there have been so many references to her on Glee :)  But I guess she's pretty important.. maybe just before my time.  She does look very nice tonight though.

Ugh, Nicki Minaj.  Need I say more?
Yes, I need.  She is a FREAK!  Her outfit tonight is a perfect example: what is that, a leopard that got in a fight with Cruella DeVille and decided to scalp her, tease the hair into a bouffant, and then proceed to wear it?!

Best Rap Album- Recovery by Eminem
I really did expect Drake to win this, seeing as he is ANNOYINGLY everywhere... but of course Eminem has to ruin it for him.. Its 'cause he's Canadian isn't it??

Umm.. did they just announce P. Diddy as Puff Daddy? Now I'm really confused.. I thought it was P.Diddy.. or Diddy-Dirty-Dottie-Money-Dipper... or something...

I Heart this song hardcore... Say my name... "the square root of 69 is 8 sumthin, right, cuz I've bin tryin' to work it out..." <- Love that shizat!
Be-Tee-Dubs: This third costume choice for Rihanna is actually not bad.  Way to go, baby bear!

J.Lo and Marc Anthony are actually kinda cute lol.  In a not funny kinda of way......   :|

Record of the Year- Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
Hot dang I think I just had a heart palpitation.  That was suspenseful!  And Wow I can't believe they won again. Way to go!  There was some really tough competition up there too.  Kudos :)

Um, has Justin Bieber really not won anything yet?

Yay, Jason Segel!  He looks so incredibly dapper!

So I just looked up at the screen and there are people riding bicycles while Arcade Fire performs... random.

Album of the Year- The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Really?? I've only barely heard of these people, and that's because I just saw them perfrom 5 seconds ago!  Oh Hey, one of them speaks French.  They are validated.
But seriously did they just win against Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry AND Lady Gaga?

So now the Grammy's are over, and so are my fingers from typing lol.  Also maybe my brain...
Did I really just blog for 3½ hours?
I must admit that it was a pretty good show, and had some amazing performances.
I will leave you on this note: Justin Bieber did not win a single award..... Love it or Hate it?
Don't hesitate to comment and let me know your opinion on the night :)

More After Recuperation--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Read My Lips by Teri Brown

Popularity is as easy as a good secret.
Serena just wants to fly under the radar at her new school. But Serena is deaf, and she can read lips really well-even across the busy cafeteria. So when the popular girls discover her talent, there''s no turning back.
From skater chick to cookie-cutter prep, Serena''s identity has done a 180...almost. She still wants to date Miller, the school rebel, and she''s not ready to trade her hoodies for pink tees just yet. But she is rising through the ranks in the school''s most exclusive clique.
With each new secret she uncovers, Serena feels pressure to find out more. Reading lips has always been her greatest talent, but now Serena just feels like a gigantic snoop...

                                                                                             -Chapters Canada

So I have been wanting to read this book since, I think even before it came out, which was in 2008.  At this time, I was in High School, and even though my reading choices have evolved since then, this book was still a pretty good read.  The plot was a pretty novel idea, at least as far as I've seen, which is always mucho importanto to me when I choose books I want to read.  There was, however, a liiittle too much teen content for me to totally give myself over to the plot.  I liked the romance aspect (aka: It got heated, and I dig it!), but if you are looking for something deep, this book is not for you.  It deals with preppy high school issues that make for very light, fun reading.

Spolier Alert: Don't read after this point if you don't want to know specific book details!

So the book started off well, though neither boring nor amazingly intriguing.  Typical teen girl trying to fit into a new school.  So why then was it such a novel idea?  Because Serena is deaf.  But this does not leave her completely communication-less; Serena can talk almost normally, and has hearing aids that allow her to pick up on deep voices.  She can also read lips better than pretty much anyone.  Cue gossip-hungry teen females.

So, pretty much the rest of the book is based on how the popular girls recruit Serena to spy on anyone and everyone.  Their teachers, boyfriends, enemies, friends... you name it.  Of course there was some romance thrown in, and even though it was never really developed fully, it did serve as a good palette cleanser to all of the preppy teen, cloak & dagger sorority nonsense that never seems to fully make sense.

In the end, everything wraps up quite nicely, and I must admit it happened not a minute too soon, as there is only so much teen heavy petting that will keep me interested lol.  There was a problem with the sorority, with the boy, with the friends, with the parents... but it all worked out very nicely into a pretty mediocre package.

I'm just glad that I'm pretty sure there will not be a sequel because I would hate to feel obligated to read a book that I really don't want to.  Which usually ends up happening, due to my book-anal-osity.

Stay tuned for more--Cheers & Enjoy♥

Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

So I suppose I will start my book reviewing on a rather controversial series: The Twilight Saga.

I know, I know... A lot of people hate it.  Let me just say that I don't care.  I do respect other people's opinion on the books, but I am not going to cater my review just because it might make me look shallow.  Let it be said that although I read a lot, some of the books I read are not that deep, actually most of them are light, chick-lit books that make me laugh :)

So for the longest time I refused to read this series, ironically enough, because I saw it everywhere, and was constantly wishing it to go back to wherever it came from and stop ambushing me every time I entered Chapters!  I mean come on, vampires? (I had never been one for the sci-fi genre, but I have come a long way since this point).  But one day, I logged on to Amazon to read an excerpt, just to see what all the fuss was about.  Let me just say that I was pretty much hooked after reading those few pages.  It was so intriguing.  I have always been a sucker for love stories pretty much of any kind, and this one just spoke to me.  I was in High School at the time, experiencing teen love and angst and all that fun stuff, so, basically, I just ate that shit up!

Within that first week, I had read Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse and was dying for more.  Thus commencing my absolute obsession with the Twilight series.  Although I am a quasi-closeted obsesser (obsessee?) I love the series immensely.  The only reason that I didn't read Breaking Dawn in its entirety the very day it came out, was because I did an exchange in Quebec that summer, and didn't want to risk having it sent to my host family's house, lest I had left for home whilst it arrived.  So when my Mom greeted me at the train station on the night of my return (which was at like midnight) she brought Breaking Dawn with her in the car, which she had purchased for me, because she is such a good little muffin :)
also probably because I threatened her....

To be continued.....
