A Fresh Start: Welcome 2012!

Well, here we are. 2012. A new year, and hopefully new blogging habits (AHEM, better ones!) are in store for me us all! I have so many reviews that are sitting, just waiting to be written. All I can say is that I hope 2012 is not the end of the world, as many people would like for us to believe. I mean, I haven't read nearly as many books as I would like. Anywho, hopefully I will be sending lots of posts into the ether, and hopefully you will stick around to enjoy them :)

So 2011 was a pretty good year for me. It was the year I started my blog, and I think I've definitely grown exponentially from years past. Yep, I'm an adult now. And with adulthood, comes great responsibility (or something like that). So, bottom-line, I am UBER busy. I have learned to manage my time better, so one can only anticipate more reading and blogging to be done in this new year.

As I promised the last time I caught up with my blog, I will be hopefully, (sometime) completing my Harry Potter Re-Read-a-Ganza! ...

I have over a dozen reviews lined up, that I will try to bang out soon, and also get back to posting some awesomely informative features. I have lots in mind :)

Reading Goals

So that's a pretty big title for some pretty underwhelming news, as I failed to complete my reading goal of 100 in 2011. I only reached about 65, so I am going to try and beat that sad number with a stick this year, let's see if I can! Let me know how you guys did last year, and your new goals for this year, as I am sure they can put my goal to shame! For shame...

As well as reading, I do also like to partake in some other awesome hobbies, like watching tv and movies obsessively, and also quilting! Cait and I love to quilt, and I did actually finish my first quilt in 2011! Woohoo for me! Here's a little pic of it (also a little bit of book lovin'!).

This also reminds me that I'm going to be doing a new feature showing all the various places that my books live. Since my mother has a penchant for moving, my books have indulged in travelling and experienced many different homes in their lifetime. Coming to a blog near you.. (psssst, this one!).

Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me.

Seriously! I'm trying to get a good picture over here!

Well, I think it's safe to say mission accomplished. On this fine, cool evening-reminding me lovingly of the Autumn to come-I got a veritable collection of sunset pictures, that were all taken within about half an hour. The sky just kept changing and getting better and better. Without further ado, I present to you what Cait and I like to call: 'Cotton Candy on Fire'    Hahaha

When I first came out, things were looking pretty dark.

And then rapidly started getting lighter. And purpler?

Lots and Lots of purpler.

I was then awed by the fire-y tinge.

Finally, we ended back on a dark note!
(With a little bit of everything else thrown in for good measure!)

Needless to say, it was a pretty beautiful night as far as sunsets go. It was also full of Me frantically running back and forth from the computer to the balcony, with camera in hand, every time I noticed that the sky was changing. It was quite a masterpiece (on my part) in and of itself, I must say.

1,000 pageviews, YAY!

So this managed to happen whilst I was not paying attention (which brings me to my next point). This is super exciting, and I hope it's just the beginning of a long time worth of awesome blogging and awesome followers! Speaking of which, I really must urge you to officially follow my blog if you like it, because it makes me smile (and also makes me look more popular-tehe).

Anywho, so I have been on hiatus for the last week or so, due to my enjoyment of a much needed vaycay-Yay! I once again returned chez-moi, and as per usual, it was relaxing and jam packed full of quality time with the fam. Which is about the only thing that I will allow to come between myself and the blog-o-sphere. I actually didn't even turn on my computer for a whole week. Which has to be some kind of record!

I actually didn't even pick up a book for an entire week either, which I must admit is quite pitiful, and in the words of Jacques from Finding Nemo (and Cait from various blogs) "I am ashamed". To add insult to injury, I also feel quite guilty, because my recent book reviews, I feel, have not been up to par, so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I love the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs, but I feel like I am cheating my faithful followers by not giving variety! So I think I'm just gonna do a few more before switching over to something new. Which, unfortunately, will not be much of a change, as I am going to be embarking on my exciting Harry Potter Re-Read-a-Ganza! (patent pending!) just in time for the release of the last installment of the movie franchise. I hope that I will not disappoint anyone with my monotony, and I promise that after that, I will be on a reading roll, and give you lots of great new reads!

Speaking of which, I really am excited for this year in books, because my shopping cart at Chapters.ca is really quite chock-full, and I have been adding books for like, literally, 6 months... so needless to say, once I finally decide I can afford to sell my soul, I will have lots of new reads. And they are ALL awesome, I promise!

Side-Note: I also will not be purchasing these books until I finish every book I own (that I have not read yet) since I made myself a deal to not purchase any books until I didn't have a single one on my shelf that is not yet read. The jury is still out on how I'm doing with this challenge :|

So as well as recuperating from being away from my apartment so long, I stupidly courageously decided it was time to gather up all my new music (new meaning all the way from last summer to last night) and make mixes for my easy listening pleasures à la my CD player. WOW. 19 burned CD's later... actually I'm currently on CD number 18, so CLOSE! But that should keep me hoppin', boppin', groovin' and croonin' till next year, I hope.

Speaking of music, I am so excited to mention that Shania Twain (one of my all time favs!-and yes I adore country. Might as well get that out the of way right now) has a new single! It is so good, and has me so excited for her new album, which should be coming out shortly. It just makes me feel so warm inside.

Almost as warm as it makes me feel thinking about how much I love Bruno Mars. Mmmm, Bruno Mars. I am actually obsessed with him. I just saw him perform at the Much Music Video Awards, and I just can't get that little cutie out of my head! He is so talented, genuine, and makes me weak in the knees. But not in a creepy way, I promise! Only enough that I want to carry him around in my pocket :)

Segueing nicely into my perfectly normal obsessions, I want to make some special shout-outs to men that have caught my attention lately:

Ami James: Ok so he's the star of the new TLC (yay-TLC!) show, NY Ink, and I love him. He is so damn attractive and just amazing. Is it just me, or is there something sooo sexy about a guy that is sooo ripped and covered in tattoos, yet he dresses in adorable cardigans and cute hats? He is just so sweet and sensitive, yet strong and capable, if you know what I mean.... YUM!

Ian Somerhalder: Ok so I know this really isn't a new obsession, but I really just had to mention him. I love The Vampire Diaries and Damon even more! Effing Sexy. 'Nuff said.

Chris Hemsworth: So being the brother of another of my favourite hotties, Liam Hemsworth, wins him bonus points after his stunning accent and amazing physique. I still haven't seen his summer blockbuster Thor and really cannot wait much longer!

I also HAVE to say a shoutout to my still hot Alex Pettyfer, who has seemed to fall off the radar, but I know that he is gonna do big things, it's only a matter of time. I still love you Alex!

Click to MTV so they can teach me How to Dougie...

Part II

Ok, so I didn't learn how to Dougie (although maybe in future?), but last night I did happen to click over to MTV to catch the MTV Movie Awards, and some awesome upcoming Book to Movie sneak previews!

First of all, cute as a button Emma Watson presented us with a new clip of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, which was so cool! My most favouritist scene, when Harry goes to die. Epic!

Then, towards the end of the broadcast, our favourite Twilight hotties (ok so maybe I'm the only one who likes them :| ) took the stage to show the World Premiere of the Breaking Dawn Part I movie trailer! (which I did not happen to catch earlier in the day, since it was leaked.... nope, not at all...)

All in all, a great night for sneak previews!

And also a good night for Twilight Saga: Eclipse, since it seemed to take, like, all the awards (except for Jaw Dropping Moment, which went to Justin Bieber. ?!. Soooo, let me get this straight.. Justin Bieber singing some rando song in his movie about singing, was more jaw dropping then James Franco cutting off his arm, and Natalie Portman self-mutilating??) Anywho, those Twilight actors (with the exception of Taylor Lautner. Always Taylor Lautner. Yum. Taylor Lautner :) were pretty flipping hilarious, if only because they are so awkward. I mean K-Stew has always been pretty hard to watch in real life, but it's part of her charm, she's down to earth and doesn't give an F. But Pattinson? He was the most awkward of them all! His first award could have been chalked up to the fact that he wasn't expecting it. But then the second, he ran off the stage and kissed Taylor Lautner, only to return and tell Kristen that he was going to 'take her back-stage' in a very 'I wanna bone you' manner. I wish they would just out their relationship already and stop playing mind games with my very gullible mind! So then Pattinson went on to award Reese Witherspoon the Generation Award with Patrick Dempsey and Chelsea Handler, which was almost too brutal to watch. Made for some good entertainment though. I mean, Robert Pattinson missing the punch line of his own joke, and ending up saying, "Well then I fucked her" about girl-next-door Reese was pretty funny. Only to be outdone when Reese had to correct him, saying that the punchline was that Rob playing Reese's son in Vanity Fair (apparently the part got cut) and then her lover in Water For Elephants, makes Rob 'the best Mother-Fucker in Hollywood!"

Which you have to admit, is pretty funny, am I right?

So the rest of the show wasn't bad. Jason Sudeikis hosted, and he is one of my favie favie funny actors from SNL and other movies. He seemed pretty funny, even though he did try to crack too many Arnold Swarzt-en-whatever jokes, which were not well received by the crowd. The intro that was a spoof of The Hangover Part II was pretty hilarious, Taylor Lautner (break to drool) being the one who goes missing. And he had some self-written songs about some of this year's movies, which were pretty funny.
My favourite part though, would have to be when he smoothly slipped in the little tidbit about being a father soon. Is this a reference to his ex January Jones being pregnant, and refusing to name the Baby Daddy? I hope so. I think that they would be so cute together. I love them both, and his funny would balance her beauty perfectly, in my opinion!

Also another great moment from the show was youngin' Alexys Nycole Sanchez, who won the award for Best Line From a Movie. Her acceptance speech was super-adorable and she ended with her line, "I wanna get chocolate wasted!" So cute!

Ok, so moving on. In other news, I have recently made some amazing food and I wanted to share some of the awesome deliciousness with you (mostly just wanted to brag actually-tehe). I was most recently busy whipping up, like, a hundred, cookies for a bake sale at work, and might I say that they were super-yum-o, and a huge hit! I also tried out making scalloped potatoes for the first time, which were pretty much a huge success, even though I forgot an important ingredient, 2 cups of cream. Oh well, next time I shall try it with the cream, and let you know which one is better. With the potatoes, I enjoyed ham, made in the crock-pot, marinaded in my amazing homemade BBQ sauce. And finally, probably the most popular, my recently discovered, original Holly recipe: Mac 'n' Cheese. (Which, for the record, I am still eating, and already fed about 6 people at work. And may or may not be eating right now. Huhhuh. See what I did there. Intriguing, no?). So if anyone wants the recipes, just comment below. Along with melting our apartment from the oven being on constantly, I have also managed to catch a few movies. YAY!

Something Borrowed is another Book to Movie fantango which stemmed from the book of the same name by Emily Giffin, (one of my favourite authors). This movie boasted so many good celebs and definitely did not disappoint. It is such a good summer movie, and it goes without saying that if you liked the book, I think you will love the movie. They did such a good job with the adaptation, and some of the scenes between Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson were just so funny and friendship chemistry was really evident between them. John Krasinski is always cute and goofy, and really provided so much more for the movie than his role does in the book, and it was greatly appreciated :)

Bridesmaids was a smash hit that was funny and vulgar in all the right places! I knew that I had to see this movie as soon as I saw the preview. I absolutely luuurve Kristen Wigg in anything she puts her name on, and Melissa McCarthy has been keeping me in stitches since Gilmore Girls circa the year 2000! The film did not disappoint. It actually was so much better than I had anticipated. It was hilarious, and also not a bad story-line. And I definitely enjoyed the dorky goofball love interest, Chris O'Dowd. All of the characters were great actually, which is good in a movie, and I think that the writing was excellent. Never a dull moment! I recommend this to anyone who likes to laugh hysterically :)



I know what you're gonna say. And what all the critics said. You didn't like it. It was too similar to the first one. But really, I liked it. It was similar to the first one, but that's what you get, it's the sequel. And it was different enough for me to enjoy it. To me, the similarities added to the humour, and obviously they were on purpose. But all in all, the actors were still great, and the scenes were different enough to warrant new laughter. Bradley Cooper managed to be hilarious, cute, and swoon-worthy. Zach Galifianakis was creepy and random, just how we like him. And Ed Helms was just flipping hilarious! I must say though, I don't think I'll be visiting Bangkok anytime soon. Or, like, EVER! Overall, I admit the movie was similar yes, but if you wanted to see something different, then you shouldn't have rooted for a sequel. That would be called a completely different movie with the same actors!

Morning Glory was an exceptional movie, and I can't believe I waited this long to see it! I absolutely love Rachel McAdams, and the other actors in it were amazing as well. It was funny, cute, and emotional in all the right places. Perfection! Probably the thing that I enjoyed most though, was the soundtrack. And of course it doesn't exist, because the world, apparently, likes to spite me! But anyway, the movie was incredible. Rachel McAdams does so many different kinds of movies, and I love her in all of them. This movie wasn't completely dynamic, but one that I will remember for years to come as being funny, down-to-earth, and inspirational! I just hope you didn't wait as long as I did to see it!

Ok, keeping with the movie theme, there are also soooo many great movies coming out this summer, and I really wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't share them with you!

So I'm gonna start out with some movies that I didn't think I would want to see, but actually look pretty good. First of all Thor, which I know is already out, but I'm going to include it anyway because it looks so darn good! At first glance, this looks like some super-hero action movie that doesn't really interest me. But then I noticed two things: a) Chris Hemsworth-hubba hubba! and b) that it actually looked kinda funny, and it looks slightly romantic as well. This is a must-see for me!

Another comic-book, super-hero-ishy flick is Green Lantern, which also won me over for the same reasons! This one comes out June 17th!

Fright Night, a new vampire movie coming out August 19th, was yet another movie that I rolled my eyes at until I saw the trailer. I mean, come on, another vampire movie? Can't we get over this already?! (There can only be one Highlander!) But then I noticed that it was rocking a pretty good cast, Colin Farrell & McLovin' (umm-yesplease!), and it looks pretty good for vampire-slash-scary movie. Hmm, we will have to see...

So now on to some movies that just look really good, coming out sometime this year.

Crazy Stupid Love, a romantic comedy starring the likes of Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, to name a few! July 29th.

Bad Teacher, a sure-fire raunchy-rom-com starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel. June 24th.

Horrible Bosses, a star-studded comedy with some of my all-time favs: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farell, Jason Bateman, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Bowen, Charlie Day, Donald Sutherland and John Francis Daley. July 8th.

The Change-Up, a cliche comedy that I'm hoping can still make me laugh in all the right places, starring Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde. August 5th.

Friends With Benefits, a rom-com that I'm hoping will deliver, even though it does seem oddly similar to No Strings Attached. Starring Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis and Andy Samberg (swoon). July 22nd.

Monte Carlo, with some of my favourite actors, this adventure rom-com is sure to have me laughing, smiling, and swooning :) Starring Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez, Katie Cassidy and Cory Monteith. July 1st.

Larry Crowne, an understated romantic comedy that I'm sure will stand in a league of its own starring Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks. July 1st.

A special shoutout goes out to two movies coming out a while from now, but I just can't get them off my mind:

New Year's Eve, the sequel to last year's Valentine's Day that boasts just as many celebrities, many of which hold a dear place in my heart: Zac Efron, Katherine Heigl, Lea Michele, Josh Duhamel, Ashton Kutcher, Sofia Vergara, Hilary Swank, Alyssa Milano, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, and the list goes on! Look for this December 9th!

The Vow, which looks like it could be my new favourite movie, boasting two Nicholas Sparks-worthy-actors and what promises to be lots of tears with a smattering of laughter. Look for Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in time for Valentine's Day 2012.

Just Chillin' in my Snuggie...

Part I

Ok, so I don't actually own a Snuggie, despite the fact that I have been pining for one for only, like, 3 years.. Anywho, more on this later ♥

I know that I haven't done a random non-book related post in a while, so here goes: the State of the Union: June edition (which will explain all the goings-on from May... if this makes any sense? Hmm.. I shall sort out the logistics later!)

Moving forward, there have been many events/happenings that I have failed to report to my faithful followers (fingers crossed that you exist!) and I shall try to salvage what I can from this thing I call a memory.

The first thing that pops into my noggin are the Book to Film advancements we have seen this month. First of all, I think that mostly all of the casting is done for The Hunger Games movie, which is uber exciting, and now the movie is filming. They have even been so kind to release a photo of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss (just to sate all the non-believers out there... Shun the non-believers.. shunnn... ShhhH-UUUUuuUN-UUhhhhhh-tehe, I just had to :) I think it's rather great, and am dying to see more of the cast costumed up! Some more of the star-studded cast includes: Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, just to name a few. I am really excited to keep tabs on this as filming progresses, and am reminded even more of how excited I am for the film! Keep up the good work movie people!

In more exciting Book to Film related news, Jace Wayland has finally been cast the the movie adaptation of The Mortal Instruments! So the news is kind of lacklustre for me, because I was sooo pining for hottie Alex Pettyfer, but I have come to accept Jamie Campbell Bower, creepiness and all. I really have come to the realization amongst all this casting buzz, that just because my vision of a character may seem like they fit the look perfectly, the actor also needs to embody the character completely and I trust both the casting directors and the author to choose correctly. Yay for moving forward :)

Next on my list is the exciting release of Glee: The Music, Volume 6 that coincided with the season finale of Glee on May 24th, which was uber-intoxicating as always. This one sounds like it could be one of my favourites out of all the albums, boasting 2 Adele songs, a whole slew of Fleetwood Mac, my favourite mash-up, I Feel Pretty/Unpretty, and 2 amazing new original songs that absolutely blew my mind. Can't wait to pick it up and pop it in the ghetto-blaster!

Speaking of television, there are some awesome new shows starting in the Fall, and also ones that I am mourning, since the networks choose to slaughter some of my favourites! New show Off the Map, which just started getting good; Better With You, that was really quite star-studded and hilarious; Traffic Light, so so funny; $#*! My Dad Says, the hilarious-based-on-real-life sitcom that has been MIA for months; and Mr. Sunshine, the only connection we had left with Ms Chandhandler Bong :(

Having said that, the awesome new shows that are to be replacing these sound pretty darn good. There's Revenge, a creepy yet preppy looking Hamptons drama. The Finder, a spin-off of Bones and probably the show I am looking forward to the most. The Secret Circle, another sure-fire-fav that is based on the books from the same author who brought us The Vampire Diaries. The Playboy Club, a retro yet scandalous looking new drama that I can't wait to get hooked on! Awake, a psychological drama that looks incredibly promising and well written. There are also some pretty funny looking sitcoms: The New Girl, Bent, Apartment 23, Suburgatory, and I Hate My Teenage Daughter. Keep your eyes peeled.

P.S. The new season of Pretty Little Liars starts June 14th!

Also a little bit TV related are some new music videos that I happened to view as of late. Now, I never usually watch music videos, unless I actually search for them for my viewing pleasure. Today I am going to talk about two that I have stumbled upon that have very little in common. Lady Gaga's 7-minute long creep-fest in music video form, Born This Way, and Bruno Mars' cute and amazingly charming rendition of The Lazy Song. Let me start on a good note. I am absolutely obsessed with The Lazy Song video! It is so cute and just seems so homemade and wholesome! Bruno Mars is adorable and I love the choreography and basically everything about the video. And it mentions a Snuggie, which is pretty much my most coveted desire. This video just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, almost as if I put on Bruno's fleece button-down right after he took it off and absorbed his warmth. Too creepy?

Well, might as well carry on that theme. So. Lady Gaga. Strange, check. We did already know this. Out of curiosity (and because I really do like the song Born This Way, and thoroughly enjoy the message it evokes) I decided to watch the video, because let's be honest, the chick is pretty entertaining. I must say that I think it crossed into my comfort zone. No, actually, it saw my comfort zone, and basically spat on it! I think it suffices to say that a part of me died inside after having watched the birth of evil, or whatever the F that was. Like gag-worthy, I swear! Just take my word for it.. it's messed. The sad part is that the rest of the video is pretty decent. I like how Gaga seems so vulnerable and almost normal just dancing around in her underoos. And then the mud, or whatever it was, was a nice touch. Unfortunately I think most people would stop watching after the first, I dunno, 27 minutes!? Let me know what you think: modern and revolutionary, or just plain strange and nightmare-evoking?

Episode 3

I know it's been a while since I posted, but I promised myself I would only share my thoughts when the moment struck me, not try and come up with something just because. I mean you can't force greatness people!

Anyway.. so today's post actually comes from a history of inquiries on my part, that is to say that this has always bothered me whenever I encounter it.

Why don't people getting suffocated by plastic bags just rip a hole so they can continue breathing, ergo living?

I know this may seem insensitive and ignorant, especially since I have never experienced this first-hand, and I don't know what it's like, yadda yadda yadda. But seriously? I mean I can understand first trying to knock out your attacker, but I think it's safe to say that one's next move should be to try to live! At all costs! Especially if the bag is see through...??

Oh well, I guess this is just Natural Selection at work.. like,

"this was a test, and you failed.. uh-buh-bye now!"

And I mean, I know taking down the attacker would be all hunky dory and all, but pick your battles here Sunshine.. take it one step at a time.. once you can breathe safely, I bet you would be less frantic, and since more oxygen is getting to your brain, make better decisions. Then you would be free to kick this jerk-off in the gonads, or lady-balls or whatever, which is what I frequently imagine I would do, if I was ever to be attacked (I would also have my iPhone at the ready, with Majie dearest on speed dial, so that she can listen in and send for help... is it weird that I think about this often, or merely good planning...?)

Evil Customer Archetypes

Another long day of work is complete, and I am once again left in wondersome resentment at the awfulness of some customers. I often ask myself how these people become so awful.. Have they never experienced or been exposed to the life of a cashier? And even then, are they stupid enough to not have the ability to wrap their little brains around MY situation...? I digress.

So today was particularly torturesome, and really the only thing that gets me through the day are the artfully sculpted descriptions that float into my mind and keep me going until I return home. Surrounded by my books. Able to relay my dreadful histoires to Cait (who is really quite a trooper for putting up with my over-zealous ranting-that-escalates-quickly-into-yelling). And most importantly, to blog about said douche-balls.

The Voluntary Houdini
          n. Often characterized by something or someone, usually an annoying customer, who disappears without a trace, often at the height of the lunch-time rush and also leaving behind items that have already been scanned through the cash, leaving the cashier very much 'up the creek without a paddle', so to speak.

          Example from today: Today's special example was excitingly much more dreary than usual. Picture this: we are very busy, and have about 15-20 people waiting in line, and when I announce that 'I can help the next customer in line' a girl that I am all too familiar with meanders up to my cash, baby stroller in tow, and, as usual, love handles protruding. Now I know this may seem harsh, but this girl is clearly a teen mom, which really warrants no sympathy from me, and she is about 2 sticks short of a match-book, if you know what I'm sayin'. So on this particularly fine day, she comes to my cash, and renders me slightly baffled, as she appears to have no merchandise (which is actually quite common, as people with baby strollers do use their strollers as carts, which is fine-most of the time). When I am about to ask what I can help her with, her phone starts blaring a delightful rap melody (yeah right) and she proceeds to tell ME 'one minute', and answers her phone. (!!) I kid you not. Like okay, I'll wait. (NOT!) So the other customers are very much as confused as I am, and try to come and purchase their items, with not much success, as she is completely blocking my cash register with her dysfunctional-in-every-way baggage. So after a few minutes of chatting it up with who-cares-who, she decides to just leave the store. Without paying for anything. And I'm like, 'whaaaaa... ?'. So long story short, she ends up coming back in after, I assume, finishing up her uber-important convo, just to ask me how many Optimum points she has, which turns out to be, like, 2. FML.

The Misdirected Angry Psychos
          n. Referring to anyone who gets unnecessarily angry at someone who the blame does not fall with. Most often seen when a 5¢ charge is applied to a bag, a chip reading debit machine is not present, or when a price is not to their liking, often accompanied by 'that's highway robbery!' or, my personal favourite, anything that implies that I had anything to do with it.

          Example from today: A man who vehemently questioned me on the exorbitant price of his cranberry juice. Like really sir, I do not know why it is this expensive, I DO NOT MAKE THE FREAKING PRICES OR POLICIES. It really never ceases to amaze me, that the types that usually berate me on the unfairness of the bag charge or the absurdness of not having a chip reader* are usually the really intellectual types, whom I really quite pity over not having the ability to think outside of their pathetic little 'I'm-better-than-you' box. Like you really think you are sooo smart, and you can't even realize that yelling at me is not going to do any more than yelling at gas would make the price of it go down.

*One guy actually said to me the other day (after the usual tango of me saying "go ahead and swipe" and him replying "swipe or chip?" and me stressing "SWIPE") "Oh so you don't like the chip, eh?" to which I replied, "I guess THEY don't".  Like yes, no chip, ONLY at my cash, because I get to decide. Really? REALLY??

The Downright Bitch
          n. This phenomenon can be characterized in many ways, and as such, is hard to really define. It can range anywhere from outright absurdity and ignorance, to just plain rotten and aware of it.

          Example from today: A lady approaches my cash (also when there was a large line-up, it was really busy today) and proceeds to purchase her items, which were two cases of water. (which I had to reach over the cash and retrieve out of her cart, because apparently I am expected to memorize the bar code of every item in the store, but whatever, not a big deal, I was completely ready to let it slide). So the policy at our store is that no carts are allowed out, since we work in a very large mall and we are not able to find them if customers take them. Rarely, we let customers take them out, or go out with them so that we can bring the cart in, if they have too many items to carry out, but in this case, the lady had two people with her that were perfectly capable of carrying the two cases between the three of them. So I proceed to tell her that the cart is not allowed out. Woah, did that ever not go over well. Basicially this bitchtastic freak-face completely lost her shit and threw a temper tantrum worthy of a 2 year old (and believe me I've seen my fair share of these as well, as our store is directly across from Toys 'R Us). She balled up her receipt and pitched it on the floor, piled the two cases of water on her daughter (poor thing), and careened the cart backwards towards the remaining customers stating, "FINE, take back you own fucking cart!" and "I'm never shopping here again!" Really?! You promise?! I definitely don't want to see you anytime soon, or ever!

Inside the mind of a Book obsessed knowledge monger (2)

Episode 2

So as I was falling asleep last night, which is always filled with thoughts running at a million miles per minute, I kept coming back to a mind-boggling question:


               where does the wax go when you burn a candle?


You may be wondering, how Holly, did this come into your brain? Well I will explain, as I know you are dying for answers-tehe. I was thinking about the candle that I purchased of late-a Febreeze WoodWick Ambiance candle in Cherry Blossom Whimsy-because I cannot stress enough my deep desire that it needs to last at least 27 years in order for it to be worth the price that I paid (which can only be described as my soul). All jokes aside, it does seem to be doing rather well, as I have lit it for about 6 hours total within the last 3 days, and it seems hardly even melted.

However, during this tangent, I was quickly directed into wonder-osity when pondering where the wax does in fact go when the candle is done. I mean, Cait and I burn tea lights all the time, and when they are done, there is literally nothing left but the pathetic little wick-endy-thinger. And I mean, I totally get the concept of evaporation, but doesn't that only work for substances or liquids that are thin, like water, ones that can fit their little moleculies into the spaces between the oxygen particles?

Thus beginning my desperate line of questioning:

Are we all walking around with wax particulates on our person?
Does this ever contribute to the unexplainable phenomenon of 'dewy' complexions?
If I were to light, like, a trillion candles in my apartment, would the air become so thick that I would be slowly asphyxiated by the pleasant yet deadly aromas that have taken the shape of wax cloud murderers??

I know that there are probably scientific explanations, as Cait so studiously pointed out, but I am going to revel and frolic in the happiness of my inquiries. And I hope that you do the same ☺

Inside the mind of a Book obsessed knowledge monger...

Episode 1

This may only apply to the Canadians out there, or the International people who have varying currencies, but here goes:

What do Canadian strippers do with loonies and toonies 

at the strip club?

I mean, it doesn't really follow the same logic as American strippers, (which I have to say are the only ones I am ever exposed to in movies, TV, or books) who receive $1 bills... Do they have some kind of satchel, strategically placed to not cover up the very 'special spots' earning them said rewards? Or are the horny pathetic advantageous lads just that generous to give the Strippers $5 bills.... Or maybe there is some kind of system, where the men kind of count and then after 5 tricks (??) they give the strippers the corresponding amount of money.. Or perhaps Canadian strippers are just that good, that it warrants spending upwards of $5 instead of dirty American strippers who only derserve ones?? Oooo, maybe it comes down to economics, and our fives are really just worth the same as a $1 bill....

This may just come down to me being too naive, but let me know what you think, or enlighten me with the reality of the situation :)

State of the Union

It is official: Josh Hutcherson will be playing Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth will bring Gale Hawthorne to life in The Hunger Games movie set to come out March 23, 2012.  I am really just too sad to even dignify a response, and that is probably why I have waited this long to relay the tristesse.

On a more happy note: there is yet another Glee album coming out this month and I am uber excited for its release.  It is going to be just music from the Warblers, the all boys school that Kurt is currently attending, but I have decided that this is okay, as I feel that they have more than enough awesome hits to justify this album.

Also the cover art is amazingly fantastical, and I feel it is complete perfection :)

April 19th guys, can't wait!

Today marks the last assignment/project/presentation that I had to complete before exams. Which makes me so very content. So much so that I can't even bring myself to sleep, even though I promised myself this morning that I would reward myself with a nap upon returning chez moi.

(Slight aside, I had to mention that my fravit song just came on the radio-Rolling in the Deep by Adele-and I love it more and more, I must admit!... 

We could've had it a-a-a-a-allllll! ♪, anyway, continuing on, without getting too carried away... :)

Another thing that has been lurking in the back of my unconscious this whole stressful time filled with projects, papers and such, is my complete conundrum regarding The City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare.  Don't get me wrong I absolutely cannot wait to get my paws on this tome, but I only read this series last summer, when all the books were available in Trade Paperback, ergo this is the form in which I own them, and buying the newly released Hardcover edition would really screw up the aesthetics of my book shelf. This is clearly unacceptable! So I put myself on the waiting list at the library.. I am currently 273 in line, so I figure I can read it in, I dunno, 2047?? So Ridiklissssss....

I guess this about sums up the main points floating around in my mind...

Long time, no blog...

So since I reinvented my blog, so to speak, I haven't been blogging as often.  I decided to target my blog more to books, and omit the television component because it was simply too much to keep up with, and was finding that for some shows, I really had to try and say things because some of the episodes weren't really comment worthy.  So of course I will still mention memorable moments on my day to day posts.  But that will be all. 

You will also notice that I changed my blog name to Book♥Hooker. I wanted to change it a) because there were already numerous blogs named ChatterBug and, like of course when I get famous this is soo not acceptable, duh! tehe. b) because I wanted something more targeted to book reviews, because that is what I want my blog to be about, a place where book lovers can come to read reviews and such, and c) I also wanted something more original.

So I chose Book♥Hooker because I wanted something that was related to books, obviously, and because I thought it was fun.  I wanted something to show that books are my passion, but in a totally fun way, like me :)
And thus Book♥Hooker was born.  I just hope that people get that I don't have sex with books for money. (I do not).
Bottom-line: let me know what you think of my new and improved blog so far☺

Now coming full circle, I must say that since I altered my blog, I do not seem to have enough to blog about.  This being caused by the fact that I now need to complete a book before blogging about it.  But I do want to change that soon.  Just not in the near near future because I am really busy.  Which sucks, and let me just say that I am soooo ready for school to be over.  And Summer to start.  Well, not even summer.  I'd settle for spring.  Since it's completely hypothetical I would say Autumn, because that is my favourite season, but that would mean that school would be commencing again, and that is definitely not what I want.  So Spring it is.  Really just anything devoid of snow, and where the chances of getting more snow is pretty nil.

Case in point: After the Winter Casserole that we experienced over the weekend (that consisted of equal parts ice pellets (the weather network's term, not mine), rain, and then snow, actually waaaaay more rain than anything else) let's just say the daily commute has been a little slippery.  A lot slippery, actually, since Sunday.  And might I add that just because you work Downtown and in a pretty Skyscraper tower, does not mean that you are immune to snow, and can wear high heels in the height of winter storminess.  Like come on!, and definitely don't get in my way.  I will push you.  Just watch me.... (actually you will not, in fact, be able to watch me because I will come from behind like an ice-treading ninja, and knock you on your primped out ass!)

Oooo, also since the last time I blogged, I saw a few movies!, and now I will precede to tell you all about them.. YAY.

No Strings Attached
So yes, I admit, I went to see this solo, because Cait is a bully and saw it without me when I have been waiting for her to come to come with me to see it for, only, like, ever. (I'm just joking, I forgive you♥)
I thought it was alright. There is something about it though, that never really gelled with me.  I don't know if it's because I have been struggling with whether or not I hate or love Natalie Portman lately, or because I found the first sex scene between her and Ashton Kutcher so creepily disturbing.  After that it was pretty good, I mean, I love Ashton in anything.  I found that I couldn't really comit fully to Natalie's character though, but I don't know if that is due to the aforementioned notion, or because her character was just really unlikeable and cold altogether.  I did absolutely adore the secondary characters though, and the parallel relationship between Patrice and Eli to be just fantastical!

I Am Number Four
So obviously I have to say something about this movie.  I read the book (because I wanted to see the movie) and I am absolutely obsessed with Alex Pettyfer.  Even more so now!  The movie was actually kinda different from the book, which surprised me only because I think since I read the book right before (which is not usually the case with book-to-movie films) I was expecting it to be identical.  I actually kind of liked how everything went down in the movie, despite it being slightly different, and wasn't really angry like I usually am when this occurs.  I would change the fact, however, that they didn't really talk enough about the planet and all of the history, and also I am completely flabbergasted that they didn't include the training scenes.  I mean, I understand that there is only so much content that can be woven into a 2 hour movie, but at least a little bit could have been touched on!  I also now view Diana Agron in a totally different way.  She is so mature in the movie, and so different from her pretty shallow character in Glee.  I definitely look at her completely different now, and am really looking forward to seeing what else she can do.

Beastly
Also a book-to-movie film, and also one that I have been waiting to come out for over 2 years!  I first learned that this book was being turned into a movie when I was in my first year, 2008, and read the book then (actually, I borrowed it from this exact library).  It was supposed to come out, I think two times last year, but continued to get pushed to a later date, so I was understandably elated when I learned that it's debut was so soon!  And it definitely didn't disappoint.  Which is pretty amazing to say the least because I went in with a pretty pessimistic attitude, since I absolutely loathe Vanessa Hudgens.  But she also surprised me, and I found her overall quite likeable.  Of course Alex Pettyfer was completely delectable, and also turned out to bring quite a bit of humour into the movie as well.  Also a sure thing was Neil Patrick Harris, who I was actually a little bit weary of seeing in this movie, my thinking being that it would be too serious for him.  He was in fact fantastic as well, and really quite hilarious.  Me and Cait also loved all of the parallelisms to the original Beauty and the Beast, one of our favs.

I really do hope that Alex Pettyfer is cast in the lead of one of my favourite book series getting projected on the big screen, The Mortal Instruments.  I think he would be absolutely perfection playing Jace Wayland

My Strange Addiction...

The Library ☺

Yes I am here again, broadcasting Live from the Ottawa Public Library.  Which probably is bothering some people since I seem to be stuck with the computer that has a keyboard from the 17th century.

I did have good reason for coming here, though, as I have yet to pick a topic for my audio-visual presentation for my Gaelic Language and Culture class.  So I thought I would mosy on over and check out some books.  Well I found lots on Scottish Highland Clans and their tartans, and also a whole slew of books that are apparently going to help me "build my own family tree".  And by that they mean discover the existing one, not giving mating tips so I can procreate.  Although how fun would that be to read?!
Anywho, I've been wanting to do this for a while, and hopefully these books will help me get started, as I really have no idea how to go about it.  If anyone else has any input, do not hesitate to share!

So anywho, now my backpack weighs about as much as a pregnant elephant...  (I am going to have so much fun toting that on the bus; hopefully it's not too crowded.)

So the Oscars were last night, and I loved them immensely.  James Franco and Anne Hathaway were pretty hilarious, and I loved all the funny extras that were incorporated in between the boring speeches made by people I don't know (unless you are famous, of course).  I especially loved the intro, with all of the Inception references, well all the movie references, really.  Also loved that they put the movies to song about mid-way through, trying to prove that this year was one for musicals.  "Don't You Own a Shirt" was simply titillating :)   I was surprised that Inception actually won so many awards, because let's be honest, it's not very often that the Academy showcases movies that I don't have to TRY to like. 
P.S.  James Franco's grandma was adorable!
P.P.S.  Gwyneth Paltrow was horrendous.

I'd also like to mention that Scarlett Johansson's dress was so gorgeous that it actually made me change my opinion on her as a person.  I am shallow; bite me.

Before I forget, I just want to get off my chest how crazy I am going not knowing casting choices for various upcoming movies stemming from some of my fav books.  Like seriously, they just keep jerking me around and I cannot stand it!  One day this guy is cast, the next another guy, neither of them being the one that it should be...  I will not rest until the desicions are made, and also will not let you rest either!  Just thought I'd let you know ☺

En Route... (Greyhound I ♥ You)

Awesome!

The only word to explain how my day has turned out. So it was looking not so great at first, woke up and there was a snowstorm in progress (they seem to be emerging at the most inopportune times lately, don't they?) I always dread travelling, as it is pretty much always at least 10 hours that have been hastily stolen from my life. Today, however, I made it from London to Toronto in what I feel can only be record time, less than two hours!, allowing me to catch the bus headed to Ottawa about two hours before I had expected. Which let me tell you is just peachy for me.. I would have been completely fine with these results!

Then I see the navy-blue perfection-confection of a Greyhound bus rolling in, and I am ecstatic!

          Wifi!           Plug-ins!           Extra leg-room!

It is love at first sight. Of all the times I have made the treacherously time-consuming journey home and back, I have only been chanceuse enough like twice to ride in one of the brand new buses-and one of those times my plug was not functioning, rendering the wifi quite useless, as my computer battery quite simply sucks.

Did I mention that it has leather seats?  LOVE♥

So the weather has also turned out beautifully, and is as clear as hand sanitizer! (not really sure if this simile works).

Weekend Hiatus & Other Random-nosity

So I've been pretty busy the last few days and haven't been able to really compile all of my adventures, but I am free now (kind of, I am semi-listening to my chatty sis-tehe), so I will fill you all in.

My weekend was pretty awesome.  I started prepping for my amazing weekend with the fam on Thursday after work.  Cait and I pretty much cleaned like freaks to get our apartment spic 'n' span, and ready for the fam-jam.  Of course I had trouble sleeping that night (they were arriving Friday morning).  It was like that "too excited to sleep" feeling that I usually only get before Christmas.  So Friday I unfortunately still had one class, which lasted all of like 20 minutes, and then my weekend really began!  (BTW: it was like spring in Ottawa on Friday; I went to class in my sweater!)

The weekend was overall pretty awesome, although a tad bit cold (though not colder than it has been in the past few weeks, which I continually reminded my family!)  Went for a movie, checked out some Winterlude activities, went to Cora's for breakie (a must!), ordered some pizza and Chinese, and of course did some shopping.  The canal finally opened up for a few kilometers on Sunday, so we were able to walk along that for a bit.  Then we flew back home, into a bona fide snow-storm from Toronto to home.  Seriously!  Thank Goddess my sister's boyfriend's sister (say that 3 times fast!) and her husband live in Cambridge, and they were able to come pick us up and let us stay the night! We really cannot thank them enough☺

Anywhoooosle... Here I am now, back in the Fo/Wyoming (no, not in the US), where my family gets to share me whilst I am home :)
Today is my sister Heather's turn with me, and let me say she has utilized her time well.  We rearranged her entire living room (like 3 times)!  But I loved every minute of it♥

Unfortunately I missed Glee last night, but I cannot be without it for long (it's already starting to affect my day-to-day tasks, I swear), so more on that later.

Other Random things that have happened since my last blog post, and the overall state of things:
     -I am in the process of transcribing/amalgamating the 5 versions of Chapter One of The Mortal Instruments: City of Fallen Angels.  Has anyone else finished theirs, and if so, what do you think?

     -So I pretty much continually Google News (like more than once a day) the Hunger Games movie in order to see if they have done the casting yet.  Apparently I have been slacking in that department because it seems as though they have already cast someone for Peeta Mellark, and are thinking of casting some wannabe star for the stat, Katniss Everdeen.  If this happens, so help me, I will kill someone.  Like seriously, I don't care how much Alyson Stoner wants it, she is not the right choice.  I mean, come on, she was on Camp Rock.  You cannot do Disney and do deep (unless you are Zac Efron...i love you), and certainly not try it out on something like The Hunger Games, that has such a strong following.  I am seriously considering boycotting if this stupid brat gets her way, and the idea comes to fruition.  How desperate is she?  She just happened to post Twitter pictures of her climbing rocks and a tree, and is pretty much launching a campaign to be cast.  Let me let you in on a little secret honey, that only works if you are Betty White!
I need to stop now, before I damage my computer.....
But not before mentioning who IMDB lists as allegedly being cast as Peeta.  Gabriel Liotta.  Who? Don't get me wrong, casting a no one is sometimes a good idea, but he looks like a total weirdo!  And he looks nothing like Peeta.  I'm just pissed at the whole situation.  Especially when they also mention Chloe Moretz being a contender as well.  She is way too young, (she could maybe pull off Prim) need I say more?
P.S. Liam Hemsworth told the press that he wanted the role of Peeta, and I'm like, HELLO?... umm, yes PLEASE!

     -I recently watched the movie Just Go With It and it was pretty good, and especially funny.  I love Jennifer Aniston in anything, and I like about 80% of Adam Sandler's movies, this being one of them.  I loved the subtle incorporation of the usual Sandler characters, and the chemistry between the main characters was electric.  The supporting characters were also awesome, and I loved how they weren't shown in the previews, so it was like a delectable little surprise when we saw them introduced on screen.  Every single character was crucial to the overall effect of the movie, and I really cannot stress it enough: this movie is light and pleasurable, and is the perfect choice if you are looking for a good romantic comedy.

     -Justin Bieber.                        Cut.  His.  Hair.                             Woah is me, I'm so Woah.
      Apparently the Biebs gave a box of it to his long-time friend Ellen DeGeneres so she can auction it off for charity.  I cannot decide if this is smart/cute or creepy/sad...  But exciting nonetheless.  Personally I thought he would milk the hair-trend train a liiiiiittle bit longer... so it was quite a surprise to me.

Strangest Day Ever...

So today's blog is once again brought to you by the Ottawa Public Library... :)

Today is by far the strangest day I have had in a long time.. Just random things happening that are not related, but stuff you don't see every day...

1) On my way to class there was a TV interview going on in Tabaret Hall (that I may very well be in the background of, tune in to Rogers TV to find out!).  So I guess this is kinda common in Ottawa, but still it just seems weird that it happened in conjunction junction with other random things...

2) I am pretty sure that I almost got scammed/conned/pick-pocketed (seriously, I had to check my pockets after!) in Sears.  So here I am, just heading to my local Sephora branch to innocently visit the new OPI by Sephora Glee collection nailpolish shades (I really just had to see them in person, even though I have no money to purchase them. PS they are Like Totes Fabu!), when I get accosted by some rando guy who claimed to be shooting a movie.  I know, creepy right?  Well, unfortunately, I did not have a chance to really even speak before he was trying to usher me onwards, through Sears, with the promise of free movie passes if I helped him with something.  He said that someone had asthma and they needed help, and he needed someone who spoke French.  Meanwhile, I'm still pretty stunned (also wondering if my French is even competent enough to help in a life or death situation!), as he is trying to tell me his name (I don't even remember, despite him having said it like a bajillion times-Peter something.. maybe?), the movies that he's worked on (Aviator, The Whole Nine Yards.. in Montreal apparently) OH, and that he is a stunt coordinator, pretty adamant about it, actually.. Anywho, it was all very strange, and he was telling me to hurry up, even though I was really sketched out and trying to process all the info he was ramming down my throat, so I'm not really sure of the timeline because it was all soooo weird and happened so fast: one minute he was saying something about asthma, then telling me I was really pretty, which is also really creeper-esque, also mentioning something about him leaving his laptop with me, and something about keys, and Chapters...? and also pointing to the makeup counter at Sears.. I know, like I said, straaaaange doesn't even begin to cover it.  So then he mentioned something about money and needing money for a cab, I can only assume to get to the person with asthma.. Fortunately, by this time, I had gotten my thoughts in order, and told him in fact that I didn't have any money on my person (which is totally true, I almost never have cash, and don't even have $2 on my debit card), which is when he proceeded to push me away and call me fat and stupid.  All of this in a matter of probably like 30 seconds, a minute tops.  I mean, WOAH is me.... I'm so woah..

So then I pretty much ran as fast as one can while wearing a sweater, a coat, heavy winter boots and backpack full of 4 classes worth of books.  Also while checking my pockets to see that my phone, iPod, and UPass were still there.  They were.  I am still not convinced that he didn't sneak a bomb into my backpack or something...

3) Still in the mall, and still pretty shaken up about being accosted, I run into a friend, Matt (who coincidentally happened to be on the phone with Cait-coolio).  Luckily for him, I noticed that it was him in time, because seriously, I saw another person that gesturing as if stop me, and I had already been through enough in Sears!  Also, when I got outside someone stopped me to ask for the time.  I mean do I just look approachable today or something.. or like a target... ?

4) So then, I am walking through the park, on my way here, and see that part of the park (which is currently inhabited with various Winterlude activities) is cordonned off, which at first I thought was just because the ice sculptures were there, and they were somehow not safe to be around due to the strange weather we've been having lately.  And then I see camera crew number 2.  So I'm like what the heck is going on in Ottawa today..  And then as I leave the park, now at the Elgin/Laurier intersection downtown, I see camera crew number 3, in addition to a police barricade.. and then I start to get really suspiscous, but pretty much just carry on my merry way to the library, which was pretty eerie, seeing how I was like the only person on what is usually a very busy block.  Then there was more police tape, that I observed to look very legit and serious, and more policemen, all surrounding a dump-truck.. Pretty anticlimactic, right?  Wrong.  So I decided to Google-it-out when I got here, and discovered that some poor soul (a 64-year old man, to be exact) was struck and killed by the dumptruck at lunch-time  :(   If you would like to read the article, you can find it here.

Very sad conclusion to my strange story, I must admit...

Anywho (she writes melancholically), hope you enjoy my strange and eerie day so far...
Hopefully there won't be any other weird shananigans to report after I return home..
I shall now find a warm, safe place to curl up with a book, hopefully soothing myself....

Hell Week, Here I Come!

It is Monday.  And so it begins.... Hell Week.

So, it's not really that bad I guess.  But next week is reading week, and I just want this one to be over so I can go home and relax!  Also, this weekend, my fam jam is coming up here for a visit and to attend Winterlude, and I am super excited :)

So my weekend has been pretty uneventful, other than last night's marathon Grammy's blog (which I highly recommend you check out).  I worked all weekend.  Woooooo.... NAT!  Except that at least now I will have money for food lol.  So I also haven't been reading all that much either, I have been way too tired, and I think that in the last 4 days I have read a disgraceful 50 pages of a book I started.  And I was on such a good streak too. (Before that I think I read about 6 or 7 books in a week).  Perhaps I will have more time during reading week, so check back for more reviews :)

I really am too melancholy to post anymore... I hope everyone's week is not as hellish as mine.

Oooh I just remembered that it's Monday and that means awesome TV night! YAY, and Glee tomorrow.  Double YAY with sprinkles :)

To class, or not to class..

That is the question..

But I suppose I will be a good student and drag myself to campus, as I know that I will regret it if I don't.

As I wait for my bread to toast and my coffee to dribble, I suppose I can fill you in on a little bit more of yesterday.  So I had to work, even though I forgot (silly me..), which let me tell you is a sure fire way to ruining your day, when you think you don't work, and then you find out that all your dreams and hopes for freedom that day are SMASHED by the reality of leaving your apartment, so that you can repeatedly ask, "Do you have an optimum card?" over and over and over and over and over and over... you get the picture (but I will assure you that you will not know the full magnitude of this annoying-osity until you have had to do it).

So whatever, I went to work and endured the people ridiculing me because I (of course it was my decision, I never should have brought it up at that board meeting I was invited to) charge them 5 cents for a plastic bag.

But then I returned home, in a dark-but-still-frigid Ottawa.

Well, since I just burnt my toast and no longer here the palpitating drip drip drop of sweet, blissful, dark coffee, I must part with you and bid yee farewell...
